Terrible customer service - malfunctioning fridge

I do not normally write reviews, but this has been the worst customer service I have ever received. The refrigerator makes inconsistent anomalous noises throughout the day that are audible from multiple rooms away. Two warranty repair companies over three trips were unable to fix the issue. The second repair company even advised they submitted a warranty claim. Nearly two months in to ownership we have an almost $4000 refrigerator that everyone who is at our home asks what the noise is. Multiple video recordings of the noises have been sent to GE Consumer Relations to no avail. The only responses are usually multiple days delayed. Part of what I do for work is failure analysis. Imagine if you purchased a refrigerator that randomly sounded like a chicken or a laser gun from a science fiction film. Beautiful refrigerator, but is asking for one that does not wake you up with anomalous noises too much? I fully understand there are occasional issues with manufacturing. What is not acceptable is the lack of a resolution, communication, or consideration. We spent considerable time landing on Cafe appliances for our new kitchen. A warranty replacement for a malfunctioning refrigerator seems to be a simple solution. We previously purchased the matching double oven natural gas range and it has been great.

Horrible customer service

We have one of these and it failed 2 days after we moved into our new home. We've been trying to get it repaired for a couple weeks now without any luck. Just getting the run around from GE/Bodewell. 3rd party repair showed up but could not repair it or even find anything wrong. Now GE is searching for a different 3rd party to look at it. That means another couple weeks. Meanwhile, well you know. All of this after we moved 2000 miles into a brand new home.

Left door mechanism needs a redesign.

The fridge aesthetics is stunning. Truly beautiful. The cheap plastic on the interior is another story. The mark up on all refrigerators world wide by all companies must be astronomical because they truly haven't changed much in 60 years. The space inside the fridge is minimal. our old fridge/freezer held 2-3x the amount The roll out tray for our freezer came broken. They HAVE SENT 3 but the problem is the piece shows up scuffed or broken because they are too cheap to wrap the vulnerable parts ends in bubble wrap. 1

Ice Cubes freeze into solid block in Ice Cube Tray

From DAY ONE the ice cubes at the back of the Ice Cube tray froze into a solid block. Had the Bodewell Service technician come out to check the Ice cube maker and he said that the heating element that allows the ice to slide out of the ice mold was melting the ice in the tray and that we would just need to icepick the chunks of ice for the life of the refrigerator. This is clearly a design fault, it appears the ice maker was never product tested. I would never recommend this refrigerator to anyone.

Issues with temperatures

I honestly loved the refrigerator. The look and style matched my house style. Yet I haven™€™t had the refrigerator for a year and I™€™m having issues with the refrigerator and freezer not staying cool. The temperature is set 37 degrees for the fridge and freezer is 0 yet I get alerts on my phone over the refrigerator going over 50 degrees Fahrenheit and freezer over 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It™€™s still under my warranty yet this shouldn™€™t even be happening if it™€™s only been 6 months of having the item!

Great capacity for a counter depth. Great storage except that bottom drawer is not deep enough for a wine bottle to lie flat since they put much larger bins on the door. The doors are somewhat hard to close and will not close on their own even with a fairly hard push. Must manually push on the door to close it.

We purchased a white Cafe through a well established small local businesses ( shop and support small businesses). The Cafe was suggested to fit our color and space need. I was surprised and disappointed when a black fridge with white doors was delivered to our house!! We had no idea we had ordered a multi colored unit. Don™€™t get me wrong the fridge is lovely, but I would not have ordered it due to the two tone color palette. I have talked to the appliance dealer so they can communicate this to the next unsuspecting customer.

I bought my fridge in Jan 2025, and a few months later after having constant water pooling on my kitchen floor it was discovered that GE failed to install a drain at the bottom of my fridge. So GE had sent a repair man to install this drain in my kitchen.....something that should have been done in the factory. Make me wonder what else they missed, not impressed having to rearrange my day so I was home for the GE repair guy to come do something that should have been done in the factory. Be ware if you are planning on buying this fridge, you also might have water pooling up on your kitchen floor, and have to miss 1/2 day of work to be home for the repair guy.

I'm 71 and just refinished a kitchen in my home. Over the years I have refinished 3 kitchens and replaced many appliances in my homes. I do love the ice maker dumpling the ice into the freezer. We use a lot of ice and the in-door ice makers don't make as much ice and take up refrigerator space. The instruction manual left a lot to be desired. In placing the door shelfs it wasn't easy to figure out where they went since the sides weren't described as to which went on which side. There was a small bin that the instructions led me to believe went in the freezer but I couldn't figure that out so I have it as a divider in a refrigerator door bin. The plastic protecting the refrigerator was left for me to remove. It was very difficult. I visit a trainer at the gym and it took me 3 days to get it off. My husband tried helping me but he didn't last long.

This is our second Cafe refrigerator in five years. The first one we purchased brand new ended up being a lemon and had to be completely recycled. We now have this and we're hoping it holds up longer than four years. The ice machine is a beast and keeps up with our family of five. Having the interior water dispenser makes the capacity of the refrigerator much bigger, adding shelving on the left door where the ice maker once was. The cooling is great compared to our other that was having trouble keeping up. The dimensions work perfectly with our beautiful cabinet surround. We're very happy overall (so far).

Worst installation ever.

This was the worst installation I've ever had of an appliance. Maybe it was my fault for going through Costco. When they first came in, they refused to remove the old refrigerator. Then they installed the handles,on the refrigerator without removing the plastic period. And then they said they couldn't remove the plastic or hook up the water period. I will never use Costco again for appliances. Maybe it's GE's fault for not enforcing this better.

I have only had this refrigerator for a month but so far am happy with it. The capacity is good for me and arrangement of shelves and bins provides me all the room I need. I just got the water hooked up and the ice maker is working fine. The reason I did not give it a higher rating was the door handles. The rose gold handles that come with it will work for a limited number of people. You can get different color handles but of course it will cost you $400+ more. It just seems like another way to get money out of people that are already paying a higher price for this unit. That was disappointing to say the least.

The projection of the doors causes the refrigerator to have to be pulled out from counter depth in order to open the doors fully. It would be nice if the hinges allowed the doors to open without having to pull the refrigerator out so far. Also, the internal water dispenser is so difficult to push It requires two hands. Why is this button made such that it™€™s impossible to operate with just a finger??? The cooling is not great and the ice maker is way too slow. It took days to fill the ice bucket.

This is the worst refrigerator I have ever used or owned. We™€™ve had it for a year and a half, and in that time we™€™ve had 3 different major issues with it. The first was under warranty, and the piece that connects the water line to the back of the fridge broke and flooded our kitchen. Then, almost a year later and when the fridge was no longer under warranty, the same piece broke AGAIN. We ended up disconnecting the water line from the fridge entirely since it happened twice in a year and we couldn™€™t afford to keep fixing it. Now, a year and a half in, we had to call an appliance maintenance person to come over to look at our fridge as it was not cooling properly (we had it set at 34, after buying a thermometer to put in the fridge we discovered it was actually fluctuating between 40-50 degrees). The appliance maintenance person said the compressor went out (probably right after the year warranty ended since we have had issues with our groceries molding well before the best by dates for months). Now our only option is to drop $1600 on a new compressor to fix this stupid fridge, and that $1600 won™€™t even fix all of the issues with it. It is literally cheaper to throw this fridge in a dumpster and buy a new one that will actually be reliable.

I have been extremely disappointed with this refrigerator and would advise anyone to avoid purchasing it to avoid the frustration our family has experiences. In the few years we've owned it the plastic folding tray broke, the lights stopped working, and now most recently and what catalyze me to write this review, is the bottom part of the long bar handle on one of the doors has come off completely. It's ridiculous - I thought this was a luxury kind of brand but it's the lowest quality refrigerator I've ever owned.

Always Broken Refrigerator

This fridge looks great but the systems are terrible. I had the compressor broke in the first year. Then the ice machine broke. Then all of the refrigerant leaked out into my house. GE tried to fix it and recharged the system and it all leaked out again. They are now replacing the entire refrigeration system and have been without the refrigerator for a month while they diagnose, order parts and schedule the final service to repair. Stay away from this fridge!

I am very disappointed in this refrigerator. This replaced another brand that was much easier to use. But that fridge died so we have this thing. FWIW it was favorably rated in Consumer reports. Here are my issues: 1) Not white on the sides. The sides are black and only the doors are white. So we are contemplating getting some white contact paper to cover up the black. And yes we can see the sides. Really guys? You couldn™€™t be bothered to make the whole thing white. 2) The doors will not close automatically. And they make a whoosh noise when closing. My other fridge did not do this. And so would an $800 old style refrigerator. 3) The water dispenser is so hard to use as to be unusable. My wife refuses to use the inside water dispenser because it is so hard to push the button. I wish I had thumbs like Andre™€™ the Giant and then maybe it won™€™t hurt so much. 4) It is noisier than my old fridge. If I could return this thing I would. Thanks for nothing Consumer Reports , I™€™ll be cancelling my subscription.
